The Inadequacy of Black Wealth in The Twenty-first Century

By Kenya M. Sykes, CPA MSFS MT

Few things trouble me more than the black wealth gap caused by the lack of financial literacy in the African-American community, heretofore referred to as ‘the black community’. Please forgive me as I use the term black community, but I’m truly sick of the political correctness inherent in that terminology when the essence of pride in being African or American is clearly questionable. I am equally troubled by the fact that in 2010, the community represented by the Diaspora can be so far behind the majority population in the United States when it comes to wealth.

In a society and culture that is so mesmerized with the term paper chasing (a la Diddy’s ode to wealth in, It’s all about the Benjamins Baby). Well, I couldn’t agree with my mentor more, because it truly is all about the duckets, scrilla, loot or whatever colloquial moniker you wish to place upon it. Though this black wealth has appeared sparingly in our culture through the likes of BET’s Bob Johnson, Oprah Winfrey, Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, and Bill Cosby, it constantly eludes the average black person and that frustrates me to no end.

This is just my theory, but it is based on a daily deluge of current events, the political tides of the day and a sheer desire to seek any morsel of data to support a closing of the black wealth gap in this country. There are so many problems that ail the black community that it would take a full dissertation to enumerate the ones that are just floating around in my head. Besides, Tavis Smiley has sufficiently covered this topic in his book, The Covenant with Black America, and so have countless others who are trying their very best to educate our community. Yes, there are many ills, but as a CPA, the one that troubles me the most is the lack of or inadequacy of black wealth in the twenty-first century. We are so enamored with material wealth (i.e. name brand ish from clothes to cribs), but I’m talking about real ‘generational’ wealth. I mentioned that I am a CPA, well I am a tax accountant and I have done tax returns reporting income that would make your head swim. You think you have money, well like one of my favorite TV hosts, Jim Cramer of Mad Money would say, YOU KNOW NOTHING! Let’s talk about tax returns where the income reported is in the seven to eight digits. I’m sure I have your attention now. Would you be surprise when I say that I have never done a black person’s tax return with this type of money reported? Better yet, I also do trust and estate tax returns and have never done a trust or estate owned by a black person. Admitting that seriously bothers me. There are so many reasons why this may be the dominant fact, but I will chalk it up to ignorance, indifference, or procrastination.

Recently I stopped by a check cashing store to get an isolated money order and people were in there cashing their paychecks, welfare checks, tax refund checks; I think you get the picture. I was immediately pissed off by this display of my people giving their hard earned money away at these usury rates. Do you know how much they charge to cash a check? We still fall for the CHECK CASHING shake-down because we continue to harbor extremely outdated views of the white man and the “I’m not going to give him my money” mentality. Well guess what, you are still giving your money away. Don’t let me start on the people who salivate at tax time for their refund (I mean government) check. THIS IS MY BIGGEST PET PEEVE. Wake up people, that’s your f@#king money and every time you get your tax refund check, the government has enjoyed an interest free loan courtesy of your ignorance. We would rather have our uncle Willie prepare our taxes, the same Willie who has a regular job and knows absolutely NOTHING about taxes, but he said he can hook you up. Wake up people!

We have to stop this ridiculous cycle and begin to educate ourselves about financial matters. Knowledge is power, but ignorance can cost you thousands, and in some cases, millions of dollars over a lifetime. Financial literacy is clearly absent in our community. In a society where a majority of our kids remain functional illiterate, I don’t see where, or how, this gap will narrow in the near future. There is so much work to be done to educate the black community. While the majority of the population earns the bulk of their money through capital gains and asset appreciation, I fret that a lot of ‘our’ people don’t even know what these terms mean. That’s a truly scary notion in 2010.

Like Bill Cosby so eloquently exclaimed, ‘Come On People’! Open a checking or savings account, get an accountant, start a retirement account, learn how to invest, watch personal financial planning lessons free on your television, teach your children about money. We have so much ground to gain, so let’s get to work.

Having that Special Lady Over this weekend?......from from a AG point of view

HAVING THAT SPECIAL LADY OVER THIS WEEKEND???

By Playhouse Director/Oranizer RANDI-RAN

It's the weekend and I know many of you will have female visitors in your humble abodes. So I wanted to let you know that one of the biggest turn-offs for women is visiting a AG’s house when it's out-of–order, messy, jacked-up, funky, dirty, lol . . . you get what I'm saying:-)

Here’s a quick checklist of things to do when preparing for a female visitor:

1. Clean the living room: this is the first place she’ll see and be.

2. Clean the bathroom: this is so pertinent because if it’s nasty, she’ll think you’re nasty and you’ll quickly loose points with her, lol

3. Clean the kitchen: who knows, she may want to cook for you.

4. Clean the bedroom: this is mainly for Ag’s who have roommates or plan to get some nookie.

5. Make sure the place smells good: Use at least 2 scented candles or 2 Glade plug-ins.

6. Make sure there are no annoying roommates around: they can easily kill the mood.

7. Make sure your satellite or cable is working, if not have a variety of movies prepared.

8. Make sure you smell good, have fresh breath, and clean cut nails (long dirty nails are a HUGE turnoff)

9. Have a few drinks and snacks prepared: strawberries, grapes, and bottled water are good choices. Maybe some alcohol. Nice Bottle of Moscato preferably… The Ladies Love that. And Don’t forget Real Wine Glasses No Kitchen juice Cups!!!

10. If you do plan on “getting busy” make sure you have dental dam (lol.. JUST INCASE) and massage oils ready: always use protection- there are waaaay to many STDs out there now-a-days!

*BONUS* TURN OFF YOUR CELLPHONE FOR THE EVENING… IM SURE THAT SAME PERSON WILL CALL YOU BACK TOMORROW.

Now, I know a lot of these may seem pretty obvious, but you'd be surprised how many Ags let women come over to dirty smelly places- its not a good look. So print this list out and post it on the fridge. . . have a GRAND weekend!

Weight Loss 101 by Vanessa Moseley Dollhouse Event Planner and Personal Trainer

Weight Loss 101: It's All About the Numbers

Written by Vanessa Moseley

I naively believe I can teach you how to take care of yourself and make a living at it. I believe in education and the adage saying we should “teach a (wo)man to fish”, particularly within the context of do-it-yourself preventative health. I see it as doing my microscopic part to buck the system in hope that we might start acknowledging the true potential of natural health care and demanding some reasonable effort be put into using it to improve the health of a society conned into a slow suicide over fast food and “healthy” marketing ploys.
With that off my chest, I’ll get back “on message” now. ☺

Sustainable weight loss boils down to one simple rule. No tricks, no gimicks, no plans, shakes, or bars are needed. In fact, your better off without any of them. Weight loss is the simple result of a consistent calorie deficit. It all comes down to calories in vs. calories out. As long as you use more calories than you consume, you’ll loose weight. One pound of fat loss requires a deficit of about 3500 calories. This is a manageable number to spread over a week, which is why healthy weight loss programs won’t promise you much more than a pound a week of fat loss. Like everything thing else, it’s a numbers game.
Healthy weight loss takes time and consistency, and will yield longer lasting results via a more holistic approach. You will be re-training the body to metabolize food more efficiently by encouraging change in lifestyle and body composition. In this process, you will pick up the habit of incorporating activity and/or workouts into your daily routine. The more often (and harder) you work out, the more your body will naturally steer you toward healthier food choices to further increase function and ability. In this way, health becomes a self perpetuating habit.

Unhealthy, or crash and blimp weight loss plans will shed your pounds quickly. Instant gratification always feels good, but you’re putting your body chemistry and regulatory systems into a state of shock which is sets you up for a yo - yo relationship with your weight. In addition, most of us won’t want to spend much time with someone whose not eating carbs because they’re trying to get through their days without the body’s primary source of fuel. They may feel alright in the beginning, but it won’t take long for them to turn into Oscar the Grouch. When the dieter (inevitably) resumes eating carbs, the body will be so energy starved that it will immediately store everything they eat as fat in preparation for the next round of starvation. There are no winners with this game plan.

This leads us to a common next question. Does it matter what I eat? Well, technically no, realistically yes. Confused? Good.

Technically, the body will always respond to a calorie deficit by dropping weight. In the numbers game, a calorie is a calorie is a calorie, wether it came from a twinkie, pizza, or broccoli. You can have your 2000 calories per day in chips or cupcakes if want, and you’ll still loose the weight, but people are rarely able to stay within their calorie limits on low quality food because it is calorie dense and unsatisfying, so people never feel full and they underestimate the addictive qualities of these foods. If you do manage to stay within your calorie parameters, you’ll likely end up feeling starved and tired, and I doubt you’ll be making it to the gym feeling like that.

Let me go out on a limb and assume that one of the reasons you want to loose the weight (or at least a benefit of having to loose the weight) is that you want to look and feel better than you do today. If this is the case, it absolutely matters what you eat. If you are going to seriously demand change from your body, then it’s only fair that you make sure that body is properly fueled. Think of your body as a state of the art BMW. You get only one in this lifetime after all. Would you put some nasty, watered down, lead ridden gas in the tank and expect it to accelerate like a BMW should? Of course not. If you want to loose weight, try to think of your food as fuel instead of a pleasurable necessity. Make sure you’re maximizing your nutrients and getting all types of foods in healthy proportion. Learn to love your veggies because they give you the nutrients your body can’t get anywhere else. Eat your carbs! But keep the portions in line with your activity level over the coming hours, and change your carbohydrates to healthy, slow burning ones. Eat nothing fried and nothing white (except cauliflower). Brown rice is always a good option. It’s not as heavy a hit in the carb department as potatoes or pasta, but it’s enough to give a light meal satisfying body. If you’ll be sedentary or going to sleep soon after, have little to no carbs. Aim to get the bulk of your calories into the body early in the day and taper down your eating in the afternoon and evening. You should not be eating any heavy meals after mid-afternoon. You can indulge a little in the hours before your workout: your body will need the energy. If your working out really, you can indulge after too.

A final must for weight loss is appropriate hydration. Hydration can be uncomfortable at first if you don’t typically get enough water; and most people don’t. The bladder capacity will improve within a week or two, and since fat is water soluble, you’ll shed it a lot faster if you’re thoroughly hydrated. Since it’s quite common for most people to mistake thirst for hunger, before you cave to that urge to toss whatever’s nearby down the hatch, chug a glass of water and see if that takes care of it. Either way, I recommend downing at least one, preferably two glasses of water before each meal. Your chances of overeating will drop dramatically.

More about nutrition and eating schedules will follow in this blog. Feel free to contact me with any questions or topics you’d like discussed.

In Peace and Health,
V. ☺

Kimora Lee Simmons: 10 Fabulous Parenting Tips

Kimora Lee Simmons: 10 Fabulous Parenting Tips
Courtesy of Dollhouse Kids

1. Happiness Is Inside: Great shoes or handbags can make you feel fabulous but only temporarily. It's fun to look cute, but I teach my girls that bliss from material goodies will fade like a candy high if they lack substance underneath all the sparkle and shine.

2. Live Generously: My girls and I regularly go through their rooms to find clothes and toys to donate to charities. I firmly believe that children who have been given so much need to experience the joy that comes from giving. All children can do things to help, whether how big or small—by donating toys or lending a hand in the community.

3. Expose Children to Different Cultures, Places and People: Even if you can't afford to travel the world, you can take your children to the museum, zoo or local park. And don't be afraid to take them to grownup spots. Eating out in a restaurant teaches children how to be quiet and polite—and gives them the pleasure of knowing you trust them to behave.

4. Make Time for Fun: I encourage my children to try new things—dance, tennis, soccer, you name it, I want them to try it. But I don't want them to feel like they have to take every class just to please me. Kids need time to be kids! My recipe for good parenting includes a healthy dose of discipline and a lot of love.

5. Embrace Uniqueness: Don't try to blend in with all the other moms—it's OK to stand out from the crowd and be yourself. The best way to teach children to resist peer pressure is to resist it yourself.

6. Make Self-Reliance Your Foundation: Encourage your daughters to strive for independence and you'll raise girls who aren't afraid to grab every opportunity and fend for themselves when Mommy's not around.

7. Moms Need Love Too: Somewhere in the midst of all the mommy mayhem, you need to take a moment for pampering or a special treat. It could be a day at the spa, a bouquet of flowers or just meditation or a good workout. If you don't take time to take care of yourself, you won't be able to take care of others.

8. Don't Try to Be Supermom: Balancing all that comes with building a company while raising two girls and now my little boy is the biggest (and most fulfilling) challenge of my life. I remind myself every day not to take on more than I can handle. I don't need to be a hero; I just need to do my best.

9. Brush Your Shoulders Off: Pettiness exists at every stage in life, so brush it off and encourage your kids to do the same. If you waste time wallowing in negativity, that attitude will rub off on your kids.

10. Everything You Can Imagine Is Real: Being a mom doesn't mean you have to give up your own dreams. Visualize your life. That means making a blueprint of every step along the way, from what you're wearing to how you will balance home and work life. By imagining every detail, you will be able make it happen

Airline Tips By Bosslady Day

I'm really preparing for my upcoming trip....This Diva loves to travel with Aruba being the 6th vacation for 2010 already....I stay very informed on all travel tips and love sharing my findings!

FROM: WWW.ALLTRAVELTIPS.COM

FOR ADDITIONAL INFO CHECK OUT MY BLOG!

What The Airlines Don't Tell You
Never accept the first fare quoted. Half the time, some other airline's flights within hours of the one you booked has a special, less expensive deal.

Take advantage of "illegal" connections. These are connecting fights usually less than 45 minutes apart-too close for airlines to feel safe in making them connect. Result.- These flights usually do not even show up on the computer when your trip is being routed. Way out Have your agent write up your flight on two separate tickets. The second is for the illegal connection that originates at your transfer point.
Example: You arrive at O'Hare in Chicago on the way to San Fran Instead of waiting three hours for the safe connecting flight, you already have a separate ticket from O'Hare to San Francisco on an illegal connection. If you miss the connection, you turn that ticket in for the next available flight. Cost for two separate tickets.- No more than one through ticket. Baggage.- Waiting for it to be unloaded can cost you valuable time on this tight schedule. Best.- Travel with carry-on luggage.

Some supersaver fares are so low that even if you can't stay as long as their requirements (some ally seven days), you will save by buying two round trip tickets-one from your home to your destination for the day you want to leave and one from your destination to your home for the day you want to return. The total may be less than the regular round-trip fare.

If you miss your flight and there's just time to catch another, go right to the other airlines departure gate instead of to its ticket counter. If it has an empty seat, the second airline will usually honor the ticket for the flight you missed.

Best seat in the plane. After first class, the choices center on your priorities. For comfort and a smooth ride, pick a seat over the wings. For silence, sit as far forward as possible, but avoid the galley and rest rooms. For leg room, try the first row or seats beside the emergency exits.

AND LADIES MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR PASSPORT...THATS A MUST FOR EVERY DIVA!

Portland boasts the largest independent bookstore in the nation, a women's bookstore, great live music and a queer party almost every night of the week. But don't spend all your time indoors, get out and hike the many miles of trails in Forest Park.
Best time to Visit: The weather is beautiful in the Fall, but if you like rain, come in the Winter or Spring

9. Dallas, Texas

Dallas, you say? Yes, Dallas! For those living around Texas in the coservative Bible belt, Dallas is an oasis and hub of queer culture. With Sue Ellens, one of the nicest lesbian bars in the country and a culinary feast around every corner, Dallas is a great place to "live it large!" This is cowgirl country, so swing your lady over to the Round-Up Saloon on Cedar Springs Road, the gayest street in Texas.
Best Time to Visit: November for the Black Tie Dinner, HRC's largest fundraiser.

10. Montreal

It's like visiting Europe without having to leave North America. Plus, you can marry your sweetie while you're there. As soon as you cross the border into Canada, you'll find your breath flows smoother, just being in a place where your relationships are recognized. Check out Rue St. Catherine in the gay-friendly Village and dance at Le Drugstore, eight floors of lesbian night life.
Best Time to Visit: July 2006 for the Late July

Travel Tips by Bosslady Day

With my Aruba trip approaching fast......I just wanted to give you some tips on how to travel!

I have two ways of categorizing my trips. They are listed as majors and minis.
Of course, they sound just like the words they are titled after. Majors are
"big" trips and minis are "small or quick" getaways.

Major Trips: This trip is usually defined as going someplace that consists of
more than 500 miles and for a duration of 5-10 days (or even international
travel). Because of the extent of the trip, it is determined a minimum of 1 year
prior to leave. That allows much planning to take place, (for example: searching
for the best deals in lodging, airfare, car rental, etc.). I have certain days
of the week that I know to look for deals (Sunday - Tuesday/possible Wednesday,
though I do not exclude the other days for deals may arise, but my experiences
over the years have been Sunday - Tuesday/possible Wednesday). Since this trip
was already decided ahead of time, when it comes to the monetary portion, that
is set aside in order to immediately take advantage of the deal. But once again,
without planning, you cannot find these great deals that are readily available.

Mini Trips: Minis are needed to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul. A mini trip
can be going to a local bed and breakfast (right outside the heart of the city
you live in) to a city within the US and the duration is for a "weekend". It
usually combines two factors: a short period of time and during a weekend. Now a
mini trip weekend could be Friday - Sunday, but I have found that a fulfilling,
mini trip weekend is Thursday (evening/night) - Monday (before or the break of
the dawn). "Why is that the case?" you might ask. Those days are not considered
a peak time for airlines and hotels. They usually think you are still at work
and would not consider taking a mini trip, on a Thursday. Well, you know
otherwise.

Finally, planning starts at home. What I mean by that is you have to set rules
(like budgeting, your dos and don't s while planning, NO Red bottoms or Louie
bags) for yourself before just leaping out there. If you know ahead of time that
you will be traveling and you truly want to enjoy yourself, make sure everything
is squared away (or close to it) at your home base. I have a good friend that
mentioned she would love to travel like I do. When I told her she could, her
response was "I don't have the funds like that". So after we continued to talk
about the "funds", it was concluded that my friend, goes out every weekend and
easily spends a number of high valued bills on these outings... (every weekend).
So then I said, "would you commit to not going out for a few weeks and if you
would, guess what, you now have the "funds" to take a trip." The funny thing is,
my friend who is highly intelligent, just overlooked that little simple idea
because the two thoughts never had a visible linkage. And now, she travels...a
lot, and still has the ability to hit up favorite spots with me on the weekend.
That extra change you wish to have in your pocket when you travel can come from
not doing your "regular" routines (for a short period of time). Another example:
ever thought about not eating out for two weeks, and saving your money? Go to
the grocery store and purchase food to cook. When you alter the small,
routinely, things, (that really take up much of your funds), you can apply those
funds towards your trips. Either way, it is the preparation of it all that
allows for one to experience the "art of travel". Make 2010 the year you
implement plan and enjoy your upcoming trip.

Bosslady Day wants to teach you how to Strap ON!

Wow so I'm a femme who enjoyed in her life time giving and receiving penetration * insert clapping sound here* lol

This new strap on is the bomb I may say.......It does just that..It gives you penetration while your penetrating your partner.....YUM!

About: The “strapless” strap-on Share double dildo (Feeldoe) proves that a good thing is too good to keep to yourself. Work your Kegel muscles by holding one end of this comfy silicone double dildo in place with your vaginal muscles, or strap it into a harness. The other end is poised at the perfect angle for partner penetration, and the shapely nub in between stimulates the clit (yours, hers, or theirs). If you’re feeling selfish, Share’s ergo shape is great for solo play and Kegel exercise, too Price is around $119

on When you buy it and try it ...LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!

For the newbies...you ask How to strap on???????????

Are you interested in a dildo to strap-on with a harness?

Any dildo with a flared base will fit into a harness which is designed to position the base of the dildo over your public bone. Harnesses come in two basic flavors: jock-strap style and thong style. As you’d imagine, the thong-style harness has a strap that goes between your legs, which you may or may not like. Some women find these to be the more stable of the two styles and thus easier for a beginner to use — but of course its all individual. (You can also find a harness that straps around your thigh.)I like the Thong type myself....but the strapless strap seems interesting too...lol

You can surf the sites of women-owned sex toy sellers to see the variety of dildos and harnesses. I suggest Toys in Babeland (My favorite plus its LESBIAN OWNED)
and Good Vibrations for starters. Wielding a strap-on takes practice; you may feel very self-conscious the first time you look in the mirror and see a dildo bobbing between your legs. Try wearing your new strap-on around the house when you’re alone. Thats right walk around the house like you rule the world with your new strap on. Build up your confidence. Say things like...Thats right my name is Bosslady and I got a big DICK.....lol You can even masturbate while wearing your new strap-on, with dildo in hand, push the base against your clit and thrust with your hips, and notice any sensations in your pelvis. Basically, you are developing a relationship with your new penis.

Use plenty of water-based lube and a condom for easy clean-up. Penetrate your partner with fingers before entering her with the strap-on. Remember we are lesbians and that little kitty might not be that big :) So be careful and most important gentle. All of this goes double if you’re penetrating her anally...don't frown your face....some of you are big gurls (I mean big meaning I give you props in doing that) and you can take it anally...Myself ..That hole is virgin or exit only....I'm just saying!.
Ok so I know that your wet now...so go dry off and chat with a sexy momma in the chat room...LOL
